What is an MRI?
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) allows doctors to see inside the human body using a powerful magnet, radio waves, and a computer system to produce three-dimensional pictures of various areas of the body. Using no radiation, this computerized examination is safe and painless.

Why do I need an MRI?
An MRI exam can be used to view your body's internal organs, including soft tissue like the brain and muscles. Physicians can get as much information from looking at the MRI film as from looking at the actual tissue. MRI can, in some cases, eliminate the need for invasive studies and surgery.

How do I prepare?
Very little preparation is required. You may eat, drink, and take your medications as normal. You will be asked to remove all metallic items, such as watches, jewelry, and hearing aids. Because of the potential harmful effects associated with some metallic objects in a magnetic field, you should let your technologist know of any prior brain, ear, eye, or other surgeries or if you have any of the following:

  • Pacemaker
  • Metal Implants
  • Aneurysm Clips
  • Surgical Staples
  • Neuro-stimulator (Tens-unit)
  • Implanted Drug Infusion Devices
  • Foreign Metal Objects in the Eye
  • Shrapnel or Bullet Wounds
  • Permanent Eyeliner

If you have ever been a metal worker, you may be required to have special X-rays before the scan to make sure there are no metal fragments in your eye(s). If you are pregnant, be sure to notify your physician and the technologist.

During the exam?
You will be asked to complete a questionnaire regarding your medical history. Some procedures are enhanced by using a contrast agent. You will then be positioned on the exam table that will move into the circular-shaped magnet. The procedure typically will last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the type of information required by your physician. All that is required of you is to be as still as possible.

After the exam:
If sedation was necessary, you may need someone to take you home.
